T-SQL Tuesday 108 Non SQL Server Technologies

I like that T-SQL Tuesday reminds me to blog. I often forget that I have to do the work to make it relevant. This month’s T-SQL Tuesday is hosted by Malathi Mahadeven ( B | T ) and she’s picked the topic of technology we want to learn that is not SQL Server related .

I haven’t been working in the Tech field for a long time, just 8 years. Mostly it’s been SQL, some VBA, C, and C# scripting. I remember discovering Lync in a previous job, and trying to role it out to the IT department and before I left, it was never adopted. 7 years later and I can’t imagine working without skype or teams or slack. I LOVE discovering technologies and figuring out how to leverage them to make life easier, or to accomplish a goal. Although I am happy working in IT, and love where my career is going, I have another dream.

My wife and I want to move onto a few acres and start a small family farm, or homestead. And there are LOADS of technologies that I’ll have to learn to make it self-sustaining.

I want to learn the scientific knowledge to balance soil, rotational graze chickens and maybe cattle, make cheese and yogurt from goat milk. I want to learn the technology to farm, to grow as much of my own food as possible. Engineering to build goat barns, milking stanchions, and irrigation. Chemistry to maybe brew beer from crops I raise. The potential and possibilities are endless.

We’re planning to list our house in April and possibly rent for a while until we find the right property to make these changes reality.

In the mean time, I’ve been watching many youtubers ( Lumnah Acres ( F | B ), Justin Rhodes ( B | F ), Homesteadonomics ( F | I ). I watched an amazing video called The Permaculture Orchard about Stefan Sobkowiak ( Miracle Farms ), and it’s got me very interested in creating an orchard which requires a lot of knowledge in biology.

We’ve started with our own backyard garden, it’s relatively small since we live in the city, but it’s been a great start.
